Helping Men Recover from Prostate Cancer

Lucy Forbes has been treating men with prostate cancer for many years and works closely with local urologists, providing a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

The key areas of practice within Men’s Health Physiotherapy are :

  • prostatectomy: urinary incontinence
  • erectile dysfunction
  • faecal incontinence
  • post-rectal cancer
  • urinary incontinence

Lucy guides her patients through a comprehensive education programme, advice and provides  progressive exercise programmes. At the  centre of the programme is the pelvic floor muscles, a group of muscles that all men and women have; they need to be trained, strengthened and co-ordinated with breathing and functional exercises to ensure a good recovery.

Urinary Incontinence and Erectile Dysfunction

Urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction are the common issues faced by men following prostatectomy. These muscles, like a calf muscle or a hamstring muscle, can be weak and damaged by surgery. They can be trained and strengthened to help support urinary control and return to sexual function.

No matter who your surgeon is, and no matter how long since your surgery, there is strong clinical evidence that pelvic floor muscle training improves incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
